Mitten Hoop Scoop (1/12)

**Each week, the TSR team will file the Mitten Report, an in-depth look at college basketball around the great state of Michigan.**

DIVISION 1 RECAPS/RANKINGS

1. MICHIGAN (10-0, 5-0 B1G)

The Wolverines remain unbeaten after last week’s action. Michigan will host Wisconsin on Tuesday night, and they will visit Minnesota on Saturday. For more insight on the Wolverines, check out Sam’s “This Week in the Big Ten”.

2. MICHIGAN STATE (8-4, 2-4 B1G)

The Spartans split their games last week, defeating Rutgers but losing to Purdue. This week, they visit Iowa on Thursday and host Indiana on Sunday. For more insight on the Spartans, check out Sam’s “This Week in the Big Ten”

3. EASTERN MICHIGAN (3-3, 1-2 MAC)

The Eagles played just one game last week, defeating Akron 71-59. Drew Lowder sparked the offense with 18 points, while all five starters finished in double figures (Yeikson Montero 14, Ty Groce 10, Bryce McBride 10, Noah Morgan 10).

EMU will play three games this week. They travel to Toledo on Tuesday, host Calvin University on Thursday and visit Central Michigan on Saturday.

4. CENTRAL MICHIGAN (5-6, 1-3 MAC)

This past week, CMU played Bowling Green twice, once in Bowling Green and once in Mt. Pleasant. Neither contest was close, with the Chippewas dropping both. They lost 90-69 last Tuesday, as they shot a dismal 3/15 from the free throw line. Meikkel Murray (16), Travon Broadway (13), Caleb Huffman (13) and Devontae Lane (10) got to double figures.

In the second game, BGSU left Mt. Pleasant with a 93-65 victory. This time, three-point shooting doomed the Chips, as they were 3/16 from behind the line. Travon Broadway led the team in scoring with 19, while Meikkel Murray (14), Caleb Hodgson (10) and Caleb Huffman (10) had double-digit scoring days.

This week, CMU will host Kent State on Tuesday and Eastern Michigan on Saturday.

5. WESTERN MICHIGAN (2-7, 1-3 MAC)

The Broncos only played one game this past week, with a pair of games postponed. WMU traveled to Kent State on Saturday, and they lost 80-54. The game was tied at halftime before Kent outscored the Broncos 53-27 in the second half. WMU ended 4/21 from deep. B.Artis White was the only WMU player in double digits with 12 points.

This week, they host Buffalo on Tuesday and Miami Ohio on Saturday.

6. OAKLAND (3-12, 3-5 HL)

The Golden Grizzlies have enjoyed their time in conference play, winning three of eight after an 0-7 start. This past weekend, however, Oakland was swept by Green Bay in the Cheese State. On Friday, GB won 84-81 in overtime. Jalen Moore finished with 33 points, Rashad Williams added 15 points, and Daniel Oladapo had 20 points and 18 rebounds.

On Saturday, the Phoenix completed the sweep with an 87-78 win over Oakland. A balanced scoring attack by the starting lineup saw all five Golden Grizzlies’ starters get to double figures: Rashad Williams (20), Daniel Oladapo (18), Jalen Moore (15, and 13 assists), Trey Townsend (13) and Micah Parrish (10). Oakland’s bench took only three field goal attempts, and as a result only scored two points.

This week, the Golden Grizzlies host Youngstown State for two games (Friday/Saturday).

7. DETROIT MERCY (1-7, 0-4 HL)

The Titans have not played since December 27, as they have cancelled some contests. They are currently on a four-game losing streak and are scheduled to host Green Bay on Friday and Saturday upcoming.

DIVISION 2 RECAPS/RANKINGS

1. HILLSDALE (6-1, 6-1 G-MAC)

The Chargers swept their G-MAC contests this past weekend to move their record to 6-1. On Friday, they beat Walsh 75-62. Davis Larson (17), Patrick Cartier (16) and Kyle Goessler (16) all got into double figures in this win, as the team was 9/20 from deep.

On Sunday, Hillsdale beat Malone 80-70, overcoming a nine-point halftime deficit with a 51-32 second half edge. All five Chargers’ starters reached double figures: Connor Hill (18), Austen Yarian (17), Davis Larson (15), Patrick Cartier (12) and Tavon Brown (12).

Hillsdale has just one game this weekend, as they host Tiffin. Hillsdale is currently a half-game ahead of Findlay in the G-MAC Standings.

2. GRAND VALLEY STATE (2-0, 2-0 GLIAC)

The Lakers had an impressive sweep, as the preseason GLIAC South favorites defeated the preseason #2 team in the South, Saginaw Valley State. In the seventeen-point victory on Friday, newcomer Jordan Harris (transfer from Adrian College) led the team with 21 points. Deleon Brown (13), Christian Negron (12) and Isaac Gassman (10) also got into double figures.

SVSU led Saturday’s game at halftime by four, but the Lakers rallied for a 72-67 victory. Christian Negron led the way with 25 points, Jake Van Tubbergen added 16, and Jordan Harris had 11.

The Lakers will travel to Ashland (1-1) for two games this weekend (Friday/Saturday).

3. FERRIS STATE (2-3, 1-1 GLIAC)

The Bulldogs split a pair of conference games against Ashland. They lost the first game 74-52. Ferris State shot 5/21 from the three-point line. Walt Kelser (16) and Michael Peterson (11) got to double digits in the loss.

In Game 2, Ferris defended a potential game-winner from Ashland to hold on for a 69-68 victory. This nice win saw Walt Kelser (22), Michael Peterson (14) and Quantes Jackson (10) finish in double figures. The team was 9/17 from deep, a major improvement.

This week, Ferris State will travel to Parkside for a pair of games (Friday/Saturday).

4. MICHIGAN TECH (1-1, 1-1 GLIAC)

The Huskies split their opening series with Purdue Northwest. Tech won the first game 68-59 thanks to a dominant first half. Dawson Bilski led the team with 24 points, while Trent Bell (14 points/8 assists) and Eric Carl (11 points) got into double figures.

Purdue Northwest came to play in the second half, coasting to a 76-52 victory. Tech shot 19/58 from the floor and 6/24 from deep. Eric Carl (14) and Trent Bell (11) were the only Huskies in double figures.

This weekend, Tech will travel to Northwood for two games (Friday/Saturday).

5. LAKE STATE (1-1, 1-1 GLIAC)

The Lakers split their opening series with Wayne State. The Warriors took the first game by 11, 87-76. Nigel Colvin (24), Kemon Bassett (20) and David Wren (12) got to double figures for LSSU.

In game two, the Lakers got the victory 75-64. LSSU outscored Wayne State 42-28 in the second half. Kemon Basset (23), Malek Adams (10) and Justin Fischer (10) led LSSU in scoring.

Next weekend (Friday/Saturday), LSSU will travel to Purdue Northwest.

6. WAYNE STATE (1-1, 1-1 GLIAC)

Wayne State split their opening series with Lake State. The Warriors took the first game by 11, 87-76. Wayne State was led in scoring by Darian Owens-White (23), Ray Williams Jr (14), Brailen Neely (14) and Antonio Marshall (12).

In game two, the Lakers got the victory 75-64. LSSU outscored Wayne State 42-28 in the second half. Wayne State was carried by Avery Lewis (18), Antonio Marshall (14), Darian Owens-White (12) and Jackie Harris (10).

Next weekend (Friday/Saturday), Wayne State will host Davenport.

7. SAGINAW VALLEY STATE (0-2, 0-2 GLIAC)

The Cardinals were swept by the preseason GLIAC South favorites, Grand Valley State. Saginaw Valley State was led by Darnell Hoskins (12), Myles Belyeu (11) and Delano Smith (10) in the 76-59 loss.

SVSU led Saturday’s game at halftime by four, but the Lakers rallied for a 72-67 victory. Malik Ellison (16), Myles Belyeu (14) and Delano Smith (11) were in double figures for SVSU.

This week, SVSU is set to host Northern Michigan for two games (Friday/Saturday).

8. NORTHWOOD (2-0, 2-0 GLIAC)

The Timberwolves completed a two-game sweep of Davenport. In game one, Northwood dominated to the tune of a 75-51 victory. Evan Lowden (20) and De’Airrus Ware (10) were the only two Northwood players in double figures, as they had eleven players score, shooting 50% from the floor. Northwood dominated on the glass with a 45-25 edge.

A low scoring first half saw Northwood lead 28-18. The offenses showed up more in the second half, as the Timbys won 66-56. Jack Ammerman (12), De’Airrus Ware (11), Maurion Scott (11) and Trevor Davis (10) all reached double digits for Northwood, who won despite shooting 2/17 from deep.

Northwood will host Michigan Tech for two games this weekend (Friday/Saturday).

9. NORTHERN MICHIGAN (1-1, 1-1 GLIAC)

The Wildcats split their series with Parkside, needing some late-game efforts to get their lone win. In overtime, NMU defeated Parkside 76-75. Max Bjorklund (23), Dolapo Olayinka (14) and Noah Parcher (11) led the Wildcats.

On Sunday, they lost the series finale 72-55. Dolapo Olayinka (17) was NMU’s top scorer, while Tre Harvey added 13 points. A 6/22 three-point shooting day doomed the ‘Cats.

Next weekend, Northern Michigan will travel to Saginaw Valley. State for two games.

10. DAVENPORT (0-2, 0-2 GLIAC)

The Panthers suffered a two-game sweep at the hands of Northwood. In game one, Northwood dominated to the tune of a 75-51 victory. Davenport was led by Scott Ulaneo (15) and Chris Rollins (13). The Panthers were 14/49 from the field and 1/14 from beyond the arc. Northwood dominated on the glass with a 45-25 edge.

A low scoring first half saw Northwood lead 28-18. The offenses showed up more in the second half, as the Timbys won 66-56. Davenport was led by Evan Hines (15), Scott Ulaneo (13) and Chaz Birchfield (10). The Panthers were 3/20, an improvement (!) from game one, but still a horrid figure.

Davenport will travel to Wayne State (Friday/Saturday) for a pair of games.

DIVISION 3

**Note: Teams that have played games are always ranked above teams that have not played a single contest.**

1. OLIVET (0-3)

The Comets have not played since December 30. They are set to resume play Wednesday 1/20 when they travel to Calvin.

2. ADRIAN (0-6)

The Bulldogs have not played since December 12. They are scheduled to play Spring Arbor on 1/16 in a home game.

3. HOPE (0-0)

First Game: 1/20 at Adrian

4. ALBION (0-0)

First Game: 1/23 at Hope

5. ALMA (0-0)

First Game: 1/19 at Calvin

6. CALVIN (0-0)

First Game: 1/14 at Eastern Michigan

7. KALAMAZOO (0-0)

NAIA

1. CORNERSTONE (3-1)

The Eagles have not played since November 14. They are scheduled to play 1/21 against Grace Christian.

2. ROCHESTER (1-0)

The Warriors have not played since October 30. Their next scheduled game is 1/27 against Cornerstone.

3. LAWRENCE TECH (2-1)

The Blue Devils have not played since November 10. Their next schedule game is 1/27 against Aquinas.

4. SPRING ARBOR (2-5)

The Cougars have not played since December 5. Their next scheduled game is 1/16 against #10 Marian.

5. MADONNA (1-1)

The Crusaders have not played since November 6. Their next scheduled game is 1/27 vs Rochester College.

6. CONCORDIA (0-2)

The Cardinals have not played since October 28. Their next scheduled game is 1/20 against Spring Arbor.

7. SIENA HEIGHTS (0-1)

The Saints have not played since November 10. Their next scheduled game is 1/27 against Cornerstone.

8. AQUINAS (0-0)

The Saints have not played yet. Their first scheduled game is 1/27 against Lawrence Tech.

NCCAA

1. GRACE CHRISTIAN (3-5)

The Tigers went 1-3 this past week. They lost to Asbury 92-74 on Tuesday. They shot 28/69 as a team, with Jarius Shumpert (16) and Kellum Bridgeforth (14) leading the team in scoring. On Wednesday, they lost to Campbellsville-Harrodsburg 75-69. Spencer Grant led the Tigers (21), while Jarius Shumpert (12), Chandler Rivers (10) and Thomas Hill (10) also got to double figures.

Grace Christian split their two games against Campbellsville-Somerset. They lost in a 112-106 shootout. Kellum Bridgeforth had 34 points, while Kierson Watts (14), Chandler Rivers (12), Spencer Grant (11) and Jarius Shumpert (10) had solid scoring nights. In Game Two, Grace won 93-83. Bridgeforth again led the team with 27, while Grant (22), Rivers (14) and Shumpert (10) followed.

This week, Grace Christian has a Friday night home rematch with Campbellsville-Harrodsburg. This is the Tigers’ first home game since November 7.

2. GREAT LAKES CHRISTIAN (2-11)

The Crusaders lost all three contest this past week. They lost in overtime to Keiser, 90-85. Isiah Reed (26), TQ Belcher (18) and Trent Temple (16) paced the GLCC offense. The Crusaders then lost to Southeastern 80-64. Reed again led the team (22 points), with Belcher scoring 18 for the second straight game. In the third game, they lost to Trinity Baptist 78-69. Whitney Harris led GLCC (19 points), and Belcher (17), as well as Temple (11) finished in double figures.

This week, the Crusaders will take on Campbellsville-Harrodsburg on Thursday.
